Lessons from a tree…
I have found my way to a local coffee shop this morning. I am sitting in a comfortable stuffed chair, with a cup of hot tea and my journal. It is the day after the U.S. presidential election, and much talk and emotion has already filled my morning; so I have come here to reflect and find balance.
There is a window in front of me. The sun is shining through, creating a rectangle of light on the worn wooden floor. It is quiet and peaceful. But outside the window I know it is not quiet or peaceful. As I lift my eyes and look outside, I see a beautiful autumn colored tree across the road. I am reminded that the creation provides markers, reminders of deeper truth.
The trees are unbothered by the the changes and uncertainty of the world. They are firmly rooted; continuing on with what they were created to do and be. They know, in what ever way trees know, their creator. They are content to change with the seasons. To always reach for the light, but also to drink deeply with gratitude when the clouds come and the rain falls. By drought or flood, disease, fire or age, someday they will fall. But that’s okay too. Their creator holds them. they remind us there is a time and season for all things.
During these days of uncertainty, a few suggestions for staying grounded.
Go outside. Sit, or take a walk; stop and notice whatever nature is around you. How is God reflected in what you see?
Take a few deep breaths and remember God is with you; closer than your breath.
Stay in, or build, community. We were not created to walk alone.
Remember that Jesus walked this earth in a tumultuous place and time. He understands and now stands as our king, advocate and high priest. Remember we are pilgrims in this world.
In closing, a prayer by St Therese of Lisieux
May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts you have received, and pass on love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let His presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.
Journey well.
